“Brown’s artistry is a direct reflection of his larger-than-life sense of ambition and infectious positive energy, which emanate out of him.” - Andrea Swensson, 89.3 The Current
Theo Brown Music
Several different cultures have converged in the creation of Theo Brown’s artistic aesthetic. Born in Los Angeles, California and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Theo is the only son of a classically trained pianist/organist mother and an Afro-Cuban/West-African percussionist father. Theo has been performing in various groups since he was six years old, beginning with his father’s Afro-Cuban/West-African Drum Ensemble. Through the years, he performed with many choral programs, eventually making his way into his high school’s theatre department.
While Theo was in high school, he started his first job as a spoken word artist under the father-son duo called, One Drum One Mic. Theo and his father performed at a West African owned juice bar in Minneapolis for over a year. During this time, Theo wrote and performed his original works of poetry while his dad accompanied him with traditional Afro-Cuban and West African rhythms. Also during this time, Theo was sinking his teeth into his high school’s theatre department, being cast in lead and supporting lead roles in every show he was involved in; he was even given the opportunity to direct. During his high school years, Theo groomed his talents as a spoken word artist and actor, but he also developed his skills as a pianist and song writer. Theo received several awards in high school for his roles in various plays and choral accomplishments.
After graduating high school, Theo attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. During his time at Xavier University, Theo studied classical voice but often found himself stretching his musical abilities, playing percussion in the Jazz band and continuing to study classical and jazz piano. The evolution of his musicianship began to grow throughout his stay in New Orleans. He performed regularly in talent shows and campus events, and began making the transition from a spoken word artist to a singer/song writer. While in New Orleans, Theo began performing in an original band called House of Fallen Trees. This band wrote and arranged their own music and became the talk of the New Orleans area with their unique originality. Theo also continued acting, joining an improvisational acting company, and was able to play regularly with several of New Orleans’ active musicians.
Theo met and grew close with many great musicians in New Orleans who took their talents and began making a living from being a full time musician. This mentality became etched in Theo’s mind and upon returning back to Saint Paul in 2011, he took this self-employed mindset and ran with it. He began show casing his talents at open mic events and networking with like-minded musicians and eventually worked his way into playing in several bands over the past four years. Theo played duo piano and trumpet jazz gigs with Paul Cherba, which lead into he and Paul forming an entertaining group called Tailshakers Anonymous. He also played in the Brazilian band Ticket to Brasil He helped with the genesis of super group Soullections, became a member of The Not Guilty Band, the amazing Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience, and long standing a capella group Tonic Sol Fa. Theo is also the minister of music at True Love Ministries church and plays for weddings and private parties on a regular basis. Over the past four years, Theo has also continued acting, appearing in several online commercials for Best Buy and Studio Luma, along with appearing in print ads for Gopher Sport Magazine. Theo also became an active Brand Ambassador for a variety of companies and brands. His passion for marketing and being the face of a brand lead him into forming his own marketing company, Dream Team Marketing.
Theo is self-employed and an independent solo artist, funneling his money back into his projects. While working as a full time musician, Theo keeps his focus on his original music, poetry and evolution as an artist. In 2012, he released his first full length album entitled of the Night I am; it was played on Minnesota’s local radio station 89.3 The Current and was featured in an article written by Andrea Swenson (here). In 2013, Theo helped release House of Fallen Trees’ first album, Leaves, In May of 2014 Theo released his second full length album, The Void. The Void has been featured in several articles written by Afro Punk, 360 Magazine and Niji Magazine. In September 2015, Theo released two wonderful works of art. A single entitled, Inertia, and a book of poetry, which was ten years in the making, titled Letters of Words. Theo also has a helping hand in the growing renaissance arts & entertainment company, The Avant Garde and has partnered with neo-soul singers Sankophoenix and Vie Boheme.
